| From: Rodney Peffer (peffer@sandiego.edu)
Dear Friends: We are preparaing to present our case to the International Relations Board of the San Diego City Council (sometime in the next several months in all probability). As some of you already know, Ambassador Fernando Remirez de Estenoz (First Secretary of the Cuban Interests Section in Wash. D.C.) gave a speech to the World Affairs Institute at SDSU and was given a reception at President Stephen Weber's University House beforehand. I am pleased to report that our project was mentioned by President Weber in his remarks at the reception -- in fact, he encouraged people to become involved with our project. In addition, our association was mentioned both by Professor George W. Bergstrom, Director of the Institute on World Affairs, in his introductory remarks and by Ambassador Remirez in his speech. In addition, Ambassador Remirez personally mentioned to me several times how important he thought our Sister City Project is. In addition, members of our association passed out approximately 70 copies of two one-page handouts: one describing the national organization (USCSCA) and one giving information on our local association with an attached letter of support for people to sign and send back to us. We have already received letters of support back from President Stephen Weber and several others, but if you haven't sent your's to us already I would like to encourage you to do so. We are going to collect these letters of support and present them to the International Relations Board when we arrange to meet with them. (You can send them to me at my USD address or to the P.O. Box listed below.) By the way I would also like to reiterate our request that anyone
interested in becoming a member send in their $20.00 yearly dues to our
association. (Even if you think that you won't be able to attend
meetings or be very active in the organization you're contribution would
still be greatly appreciated.) You can make checks payable to the San
Diego-Cuba Sister City Association and send them to Thank you for your attention and any assistance you can give us. RGP |
