"The scholarship program assists both the United States and Cuba by
churning out quality physicians with expertise in rural medicine, Arnaldo
Trujillo, of the New Mexico by the Las Vegas, New Mexico-Banes, Cuba Sister
Cities Association, said last week.
The nonprofit group helps in covering preparation and transportation costs for students accepted to the school. The scholarship commits Bejarano to spend two to three years in premedical studies, then four years in medical school. He would have to work as a physician in Cuba for additional time after that.
The total cost of Bejarano's seven-year education is valued at about $200,000, Bejarano said."
